WID – WEARABLE AND INTERACTIVE DEVICE
Technology and art meet
The encounter between apparently distant worlds generates fertile ground for discussion and sharing, which unleashes outstanding intellectual creativity. The interdisciplinary and cross-sector skills gave birth to WID – Wearable and Interactive Device, a project aimed at the enhancement and the assisted, personalized enjoyment and use of Cultural Heritage. The innovative device has been protected through the deposit of an industrial invention patent.
AN INTERDISCIPLINARY PROJECT
The WID project has seen the involvement of the Industrial Design team from the Department of Engineering of the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”, the team from SADAS and the spin-off CNR-ALA-Advanced Lidar Applications, in the making of an innovative system for the enjoyment and use of cultural artefacts.
The synergies between high scientific skills including the fields of Design, Mechanical, Electronical and Informatics Engineering, bring together the academic and the industrial worlds. This gives birth to an innovative output for the enhancement of the artistic heritage and the creation of new opportunities of competitive growth for the Made in Italy system and new knowledge.
A NEW SYSTEM OF A PERSONALIZED AUDIO GUIDE
The innovative patented WID system will fill the gaps of current applications based on georeferential systems that tend to be inaccurate, and on the slow semantic recognition systems burdened by the significant amount of data.
The WID system will be able to:
- determine the spatial orientation of the device in the reference cultural context;
- constantly track the trajectory between the observation point and the work of art;
- ensure maximum flexibility and adaptability of the system;
- ensure facility of interaction and the correspondence between input and output.
The company SADAS Srl filed the industrial invention patent of the wearable customizable predictive audio guide device with the University of Campania “Luigi Vanvitelli”. SADAS holds the exclusive ownership for the exploitation and development of the patent. Moreover, the company has already started the activities aimed at developing the invention in order to enhance the results achieved and trigger the commercial strategies for positioning the new system of enjoyment and use.
NEW PERSPECTIVES
The WID device represents the starting point for an audacious, cutting-edge project, which uses the intersection between open service and big data to provide visitors with a set of information and further services, i.e., the creation of personalized narrative paths usable through the innovative audio guide. This will enrich the offer in terms of entertainment, education and emotional and inclusive enjoyment and use.
As an industrial partner that constantly fosters technology research, SADAS is actively involved in innovative projects by providing its expertise in the field of Machine Learning in order to build a personalized recommendation system that will differentiate each user experience in terms of content, modalities and languages conveyed.
In a wider perspective and with the implementation of specific technologies, the future projects will provide new opportunities for the configuration of innovative solutions to be applied in the fields of healthcare, safety and assisted enjoyment and use.
Fostering knowledge of cultural places and sites means investing on the construction of a “digital ecosystem of culture and tourism” to interpret the complexity and variety of the artistic heritage and build the places’ identity. The osmosis between cultural spaces and urban places, ensured by a technologically monitored interactive process between user/visitor and cultural heritage, will enhance the definition of highly attractive clusters scattered throughout the territory.
